Marie Antoinette opens nationwide

Kirsten Dunst stars as Marie Antoinette in writer/director Sofia Coppola’s fresh adaptation and contemporary look at one of the most infamous 18th Century historical figures, Queen of France, beginning with her arranged marriage to Louis XVI and ending when she is forced out of Versailles. Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst best known for co-starring with Tobey Maguire in the “Spider-Man” movies) without guidance in a dangerous world, rebels against the isolated atmosphere of Versailles and becomes France’s most misunderstood monarch.

In the Columbia Pictures movie is based on the 2002 biography by Antonia Fraser and opens nationwide October 20. Although several films have been shot in Versailles, Sofia Coppola was given the run of the place during the movie’s two-month shoot in France. She was presented with giant iron keys that allowed her access to the most off-limits rooms, like Marie’s bedroom and the legendary Hall of Mirrors.
